Chinese astronauts return to Earth after ‘successful’ mission

Image
Three Chinese astronauts safely returned to Earth on Tuesday after five months in orbit at the country’s space station, state media reported. Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao touched down at China’s Dongfeng landing site at 8:11 am (0011 GMT), according to state broadcaster CCTV. Footage showed their return capsule parachuting down into the barren Gobi Desert, kicking up a cloud of orange dust as it hit the ground. “On-site medical supervision and insurance personnel confirmed that the astronauts… are in good health,” CCTV said. “The Shenzhou-16 crewed flight mission was a complete success.” Jing, Zhu and Gui travelled to China’s Tiangong space station in late May and were in orbit for 154 days. They spent the time conducting scientific experiments and carried out a nearly eight-hour spacewalk. A fresh crew replaced them last week after the Shenzhou-17 mission blasted off from the Jiuquan launch site in the country’s northwest. Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xin

Pro-Israel ads make their way into children’s video games

Image
Maria Julia Cassis was sitting down to a meal in her terraced home in north London when her 6-year-old son ran into the dining room, his face pale. The puzzle game on his Android phone had been interrupted by a video showing Hamas militants, terrified Israeli families and blurred graphic footage. Over a black screen, a message from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the first grader: “WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT THOSE WHO HARM US PAY A HEAVY PRICE.” Cassis, a 28-year-old barista from Brazil, said that the ad left her son shaken and she quickly deleted the game. “He was shocked,” she said in a telephone interview last week. “He literally said, ‘What is this bloody ad doing in my game?'” Reuters has not been able to establish how the ad came to her son’s video game, but her family isn’t alone. The news agency has documented at least five other cases across Europe where the same pro-Israel video, which carried footage of rocket attacks, a fiery explosion, and masked gunmen, w

Starlink to provide connectivity in Gaza: Elon Musk

Image
Elon Musk said on Saturday that SpaceX’s Starlink will support communication links in Gaza with “internationally recognized aid organizations”. Musk said in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that it was not clear who has authority for ground links in Gaza, but we do know that “no terminal has requested a connection in that area”. A telephone and internet blackout isolated people in the Gaza Strip from the world and from each other on Saturday, with calls to loved ones, ambulances or colleagues elsewhere all but impossible as Israel widened its air and ground assault. International humanitarian organizations said the blackout, which began on Friday evening, was worsening an already desperate situation by impeding life-saving operations and preventing them from contacting their staff on the ground. SpaceX did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment on how they will make sure the Starlink connection is used by aid organizations and not Hama

Motorola unveils smartphone that can wrap around your wrist

Image
The Lenovo-owned Motorola has introduced a concept phone display that can wrap around your wrist. The device, which Motorola unveiled on Tuesday and which it refers to as an adaptive display, is designed to showcase future phone possibilities allowed by a flexible screen. The company says the screen can be “bent and shaped into different forms” depending on what you want. When flat, its 6.9-inch screen can be used just like a standard phone with a full Android experience. From there, it can be adjusted to various stand modes. In the upright position, for instance, it offers a “more compact form of full Android” since it’s running on a 4.6-inch display. Motorola envisions people using the device for video calls in the upright position. Alternatively, Motorola says you can wrap the device around your wrist to mimic the experience of the Razr Plus’s cover screen. Since the phone is just a concept right now, we don’t have pricing or even know if the phone will ever actually become a

The Shenzhou-17 blasted off from the Jiuquan launch site in arid northwest China at 11:14 am (0314 GMT), carrying a three-astronaut team with the youngest average age since the space station’s construction. A send-off ceremony on Thursday morning saw the space travellers bid farewell to observers before heading off to prepare for the rocket launch. “The spaceship, atop a Long March-2F carrier rocket, blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China,” China’s state news agency Xinhua reported. Captaining the team is Tang Hongbo, who is on his first return mission to the space station. Accompanying him are Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xinlin, both in their thirties and each making maiden space voyages. The all-male crew is the youngest ever to man a mission to the space station, with an average age o

Bitcoin soars to 1-1/2-year high on ETF bets

Image
Bitcoin soared 10% to 1-1/2 year highs on Monday, and crypto-linked stocks followed it higher as speculation about the possibility of a bitcoin exchange-traded fund drove enthusiasm about the sector and prompted short-sellers to quit positions. The world’s biggest cryptocurrency was last at $32,833 after trading as high as $34,283. Crypto-related shares such as exchange Coinbase Global (COIN.O), miner Marathon Digital (MARA.O) bitcoin holder MicroStrategy (MSTR.O) rose sharply and were making further gains in after-hours U.S. trade. Smaller rival ether also surged 6%, hitting a two-month high and breaking above its 200-day moving average. Anticipation of a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) has grown after reports this month, including from Reuters, that the US Securities and Exchange Commission won’t appeal a ruling it was wrong to reject an application from Grayscale Investments. The prospect of a spot bitcoin ETF is seen driving broader flows into the cryptocurrency, as it woul

Sony says ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ video game sales set record

Image
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) said Monday that the ‘ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ‘ videogame was snapped up so fast that it set a record for PlayStation Studios. Watch ARY News live on  live.arynews.tv   ‘ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ‘, developed in collaboration with Insomniac Games, became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in the 24 hours after its release on Friday, with more than 2.5 million copies bought, according to SIE. “I want to say thank you to the fans,” SIE global marketing vice president Eric Lempel said in a release. “With an epic storyline, two playable superheroes, a visually-stunning Marvel’s New York, and so much more, this is a game you can get lost in for hours.” ‘ Spider-Man ‘ emerged as a superhero in the Marvel comics of the early 1960s and first appeared in video games in the 1990s, but without major success. Blockbuster superhero movies in the 2000s led to the character headlining a series of games developed from 2018 by Insomniac for Sony, which

Moon’s age revealed!

Image
During the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 – the last time people walked on the moon – U.S. astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan collected about 243 pounds (110.4 kg) of soil and rock samples that were returned to Earth for further study. A half century later, crystals of the mineral zircon inside a coarse-grained igneous rock fragment collected by Schmitt are giving scientists a deeper understanding about the moon’s formation and the precise age of Earth’s celestial partner. The moon is about 40 million years older than previously thought – forming more than 4.46 billion years ago, within 110 million years after the solar system’s birth, scientists said on Monday, based on analyses of the crystals. The leading hypothesis for lunar formation is that during the solar system’s chaotic early history a Mars-sized object called Theia slammed into primordial Earth. This blasted magma – molten rock – into space, forming a debris disk that orbited Earth and coalesced into the moon. But

India launches key test for manned orbital mission

Image
NEW DELHI: India on Saturday successfully launched the first unmanned trial run of its upcoming crewed orbital mission, in the latest milestone for its spacefaring ambitions. The Gaganyaan (“Skycraft”) mission is slated to send three astronauts into Earth’s orbit in 2025, an important yardstick of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) technical capabilities. Saturday’s rocket tested the emergency escape system of its crew module, which separated from the thruster and made a soft sea landing about 10 minutes after the launch. “I am very happy to announce the successful accomplishment of the mission,” ISRO chief S. Somanath said afterwards. The lift-off was postponed for two hours after bad weather and a glitch in the engine. ISRO will conduct a series of 20 major tests, including carrying a robot to outer space, before the final manned mission takes place in 2025. Gaganyaan is the first mission of its kind for India and comes with an estimated price tag of $1.08 billion

Mysterious 8 billion-year-old energetic burst detected

Image
Astronomers have detected an intense flash of radio waves coming from what looks like a merger of galaxies dating to about 8 billion years ago – the oldest-known instance of a phenomenon called a fast radio burst that continues to defy explanation. This burst in less than a millisecond unleashed the amount of energy our sun emits in three decades, researchers said. It was detected using the Australian SKA Pathfinder, a radio telescope in the state of Western Australia. Its location was pinpointed by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, one of the most powerful optical telescopes. A fast radio burst, or FRB, is a pulse of radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation. It lasts a small fraction of a second but outshines most other sources of radio waves in the universe. Radio waves have the longest wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. “The radio waves in FRBs are similar to those used in microwave ovens. The amount of energy in this FRB is the equiva

Instagram apologises for adding ‘terrorist’ to Palestinians’ bios

Image
Meta has apologised after for adding “terrorist” into the profile bios of some Instagram users describing themselves as Palestinian. In a blog post, Meta said it fixed a “problem” faced by some Instagram users, with the word “Palestinian” written in English on their profile, the Palestinian flag emoji and the word “alhamdulillah” written in Arabic. When auto-translated to English the phrase read: “Praise be to god, Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom.” A TikTok user posted about the issue, noting that different combinations still translated to “terrorist”. @khanman1996 said in his posts he was not Palestinian himself but had tested the error out after being told about it by an unnamed Palestinian friend. The platform has also faced accusations of suppressing content voicing support for Palestinians during the Israel-Gaza conflict. Some users say they have been “shadow banned” on Instagram over pro-Palestinian posts. This is when a platform intervenes to make su

X to launch premium subscriptions soon

Image
Elon Musk said on Friday social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will soon launch two new tiers of premium subscriptions. “One is lower cost with all features, but no reduction in ads, and the other is more expensive, but has no ads,” Musk said on a post on X. Musk, who took over the platform in October 2022, has been trying to boost revenue by charging users and by wooing back advertisers, who stopped buying ads after Musk fired most employees and disbanded content moderation teams. Musk has acknowledged that the platform has taken a hit on revenue and has blamed activists for pressuring advertisers. While he did not provide more details on the subscription plans, a test case by X earlier this week suggested several restrictions for users who don’t want to pay for the service. X started charging new users $1 in New Zealand and the Philippines as a test case for accessing the platform. New users who opted out of subscribing will only be able to take “read only” actio

Meta now lets you stop Instagram from tracking web activity: Here’s how

Image
The American multinational technology conglomerate, Meta, has extended its option to block the data collection to its photo and video sharing application, Instagram, which was previously available only on Facebook. Meta introduced a new tool, “Activity Off-Meta Technologies,” which enables the user to manage how information from other businesses is linked to their personal Facebook and Instagram accounts, which allows users to review, disconnect, or clear the entire data from their accounts. Meta-owned application, Instagram, now offers the ‘Transfer your Information” feature, to assist users in transferring their data including photos and videos to other services, making it easier to share memories. Similarly, Meta has also streamlined the “Download your Information” and “Access Your Information” sections into a unified page for Instagram. Earlier to this, Meta Platforms is looking to introduce ad-free subscription plans for Instagram and Facebook users in Europe, two people fam

iOS 17.1 contains fixes for iPhone 15 screen burn symptoms

Image
In a recent development, Apple released notes for the iOS 17.1 beta, which claimed to contain a fix for an issue that might be the cause of the newly launched iPhone 15 screen burn-in. According to the released notes summary, Apple stated that the new iOS 17.1 update “Fixes an issue that may cause display image persistence.” It is pertinent to mention here that some multiple owners of the most recently launched iPhone 15 Pro Max are reportedly finding the image of the home screen apps being burnt-in to the display. Burn-in, a term used from the old days of CRT screens, has made its presence felt with OLED displays as well. Technically, the burn-in typically occurs after a very long time of displaying static of the same image. However, it’s been a month after the release of the iPhone 15 series, and the users of the iPhone Pro Max are taken to Reddit and Apple’s support forums to report issues. It is worth mentioning here that the problem is not widespread and it’s uncertain wheth

Netflix raises prices and adds subscribers, despite strikes

Image
Netflix (NFLX.O) increased subscription prices for some streaming plans in the United States, Britain and France on Wednesday as it shattered expectations for new customers, sending its shares surging 13%. Almost 9 million subscribers joined Netflix around the globe in the third quarter, surpassing Wall Street analysts’ forecast for 6 million, according to LSEG. Netflix said it expected a similar number of additions in the current quarter. The strong performance showed Netflix was thriving despite Hollywood labor tensions that shut down a large swath of U.S. production. Netflix makes many of its shows and movies overseas, which accounted for the bulk of its new sign-ups. Netflix pointed to the global success of “One Piece,” a live-action adaptation of the venerable Japanese manga series and an example of its hefty investment in stories with local resonance that travel the world. The streaming giant also attracted new audiences to long-running television shows, such as the legal dra
