Bitcoin prices on the Australian arm of Binance, the world’s largest crypto-currency exchange, were at a 20% discount to rival exchanges on Tuesday, in a sign customers were seeking to exit their positions quickly. The price of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency, bitcoin , was around A$34,000 ($23,062) on  Binance Australia , compared with around A$43,000 on  BTC Markets , an Australia-based cryptocurrency exchange. Bitcoin was quoted around $27,790 outside Australia on other exchanges such as Bitstamp . “Due to the recent removal of fiat on-ramp services by our payment processor’s banking partner, some Australian users have been withdrawing their AUD holdings from the platform in advance of the off-ramp closure on 1 June,” a Binance spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “As a result, AUD pairs have experienced less liquidity which has impacted their pricing. We will be delisting remaining AUD pairs in line with the closure of fiat off ramp services.” Earlier this month, the

‘AI means everyone can now be a programmer’

Image
Artificial intelligence (AI) means everyone can now be a computer programmer as all they need to do is speak to the computer, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on Monday, hailing the end of the “digital divide”. Nvidia has surged to become the world’s most valuable listed semiconductor company as a major supplier of chips and computing systems for artificial intelligence. The company last week  forecast  second-quarter revenue more than 50% above Wall Street estimates and said it was boosting supply to meet surging demand for its artificial-intelligence chips, which are used to power ChatGPT and many similar services. Speaking to thousands of people at the Computex forum in Taipei, Huang, who was born in southern Taiwan before his family emigrated to the United States when he was a child, said AI was leading a computing revolution. “There’s no question we’re in a new computing era,” he said in a speech, occasionally dropping in words of Mandarin or Taiwanese to the delight of the crowd

It also claimed to have affected the site of the national airline Air Senegal. Most of the affected sites were back online by mid-afternoon on Saturday, but access to others remained intermittent. Global internet monitor NetBlocks told AFP that the attack started at around midnight on Friday and had affected “dozens of government websites, networks, and online services”. “There do appear to be intermittent restorations in service, however these have not been sustained and the attack is ongoing,” NetBlocks added. Blockchain CEO says default would hit crypto initially

Image
A US government default would trigger an initial pull-back from crypto currencies followed by a “push upward” the CEO of London-based crypto firm Blockchain said on Thursday. The U.S. government could fall behind on its bills next month – and even default on its debt – if Congress does not raise a $31.4 trillion  cap on government borrowing , a failure that could trigger economic calamity and panic on global financial markets. In the short term, “a U.S. default or a U.S. recession are probably bad for crypto. These are risk assets, and you want to take risk off,” Blockchain.com CEO Peter Smith said at the Qatar Economic Forum, organised by Bloomberg. “On a long horizon, these are probably good for crypto…If the U.S. government defaults, we’ll probably see a quick pull-back and then a very strong push upward in the crypto market.” The crypto currency market has followed cyclical patterns and while 2022 was “quite painful”, it is recovering this year and 2024 will be “another expone

Facebook owner Meta slashes business teams in final round of layoffs

Image
Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook, slashed jobs across its business and operations units on Wednesday as it carried out its last batch of a three-part round of layoffs, part of a plan announced in March to eliminate 10,000 roles. Dozens of employees working in teams such as marketing, site security, enterprise engineering, program management, content strategy and corporate communications took to LinkedIn to announce that they were laid off. The social media giant also cut employees from its units focused on privacy and integrity, according to the LinkedIn posts. Meta earlier this year became the first Big Tech company to announce a second round of mass layoffs, after showing more than 11,000 employees the door in the fall. The cuts brought the company’s headcount down to where it stood as of about mid-2021, following a hiring spree that doubled its workforce since 2020. The company’s shares closed marginally up in a broadly weaker market. They have more than doubled in value this

Climate scientists flee Twitter as hostility surges

Image
Scientists suffering insults and mass-spam are abandoning Twitter for alternative social networks as hostile climate-change denialism surges on the platform following Elon Musk’s takeover. Researchers have documented an explosion of hate and misinformation on Twitter since the Tesla billionaire took over in October 2022 — and now experts say communicating about climate science on the social network on which many of them rely is getting harder. Policies aimed at curbing the deadly effects of climate change are accelerating, prompting a rise in what experts identify as organised resistance by opponents of climate reform. Peter Gleick, a climate and water specialist with nearly 99,000 followers, announced on May 21 he would no longer post on the platform because it was amplifying racism and sexism. While he is accustomed to “offensive, personal, ad hominem attacks, up to and including direct physical threats”, he told AFP, “in the past few months, since the takeover and changes at Tw

TikTok sues Montana after state bans app

Image
TikTok on Monday filed a lawsuit challenging the US state of Montana’s new ban  on use of the Chinese-owned app, the first state to bar the popular short-video sharing service. TikTok argues the ban, which would take effect on Jan. 1, violates First Amendment rights of the company and users. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Montana, also argues the ban is pre-empted by federal law because it intrudes upon matters of exclusive federal concern and violates the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which limits the authority of States to enact legislation that unduly burdens interstate and foreign commerce. TikTok, which is owned by China’s ByteDance and used by more than 150 million Americans, has faced growing calls from U.S. lawmakers and state officials to ban the app nationwide over concerns about potential Chinese government influence over the platform. Montana could impose fines of $10,000 for each violation by TikTok and additional fines of $10,000 per day if

Facebook owner Meta hit with record $1.3 bln fine

Image
Meta was hit with a record 1.2 billion euro ($1.3 billion) fine by its lead European Union privacy regulator over its handling of user information and given five months to stop transferring users’ data to the United States. The fine, imposed by Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC), came after Meta continued to transfer data beyond a 2020  EU court ruling that invalidated an EU-U.S. data transfer pact. It tops the previous record EU privacy fine of 746 million euros handed by Luxembourg to Amazon.com in 2021. The battle over where Meta’s Facebook stores its data began a decade ago after Austrian privacy campaigner Max Schrems brought a legal challenge over the risk of U.S. snooping in light of disclosures by former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. Meta said in a statement that it will appeal the ruling, including the “unjustified and unnecessary fine that “sets a dangerous precedent for countless other companies.” It will also seek a stay of the susp
