Coastal communities and cities like Hai Phong in Vietnam and the Thai capital Bangkok are “facing unprecedented threats from longer lasting and more intense storms”, a statement about the study said. Crypto stocks jump after Trump’s pro-bitcoin speech

Image
Shares of New York-listed cryptocurrency firms gained on Monday after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump talked up bitcoin and promised friendlier regulation for the industry. Crypto exchange Coinbase’s shares climbed 3%, while miners Bitfarms, Riot Platforms and CleanSpark were up between 4% and 5%. Trump has projected himself as the pro-bitcoin candidate ahead of the election in November. The former president’s return could be a huge win for the industry, which has often complained of excessive oversight and a hostile regulatory environment under President Joe Biden. “Any ‘Trump trade’ into U.S election should include greater allocation to bitcoin and bitcoin-linked stocks,” Bernstein analysts wrote in a note. Crypto has rapidly moved from the fringes of the financial world to the mainstream, helped by institutional investors’ backing and the approval of exchange-traded funds tied to spot price of bitcoin and ether. “The sentiment globally has been incredibly positi

Don’t lose your iPhone in THIS country, as ‘Find My’ doesn’t work there

Image
Apple’s ‘Find My’ feature, renowned for assisting users locate lost iPhones, is non-functional in South Korea. This restriction applies not only to iPhones sold in the country but also to any iPhone brought into South Korea from abroad. Consequently, users cannot use “Find My” to recover lost devices or share location data, complicating simple tasks like meeting friends. Apple’s support forums and statements indicate that this limitation stems from local laws. However, the relevant Find My support page subtly notes, “Location sharing isn’t supported in South Korea and may be unavailable in other regions due to local laws.” Despite Apple’s stance, discussions on various forums and a petition on the National Assembly Petition website of South Korea question this explanation. Samsung, for instance, faces no such constraints with its equivalent location-tracking service. This discrepancy raises doubts about whether the restriction is truly law-based or a result of Apple’s internal

iOS 18 review: Major customization with a pinch of AI

Image
Apple has taken a surprising turn with iOS 18, emphasizing customization and user control across nearly every feature, rather than focusing solely on the anticipated Apple Intelligence – AI. While investors and tech enthusiasts eagerly awaited news on Apple’s AI advancements, it has become evident that iOS 18 offers much more than AI capabilities. During the height of the Android vs. iPhone debates in the 2010s, one of the main reasons users preferred Android was its extensive customization options. In contrast, Apple’s straightforward grid of icons seemed limited compared to the dynamic and customizable Android home screens. However, industry trends and the departure of Jony Ive have led Apple to embrace a new direction. The introduction of alternate app icons was a significant step toward allowing iPhone users to personalize their devices. Although Apple Intelligence shows promise, it is not yet available for testing. Therefore, this review focuses on iOS 18’s features beyond AI

The reshare status updates feature is expected to enhance the user experience by simplifying content sharing. Currently, if someone wants to share a status updat

CrowdStrike says over 97% of Windows sensors back online

Image
More than 97% of Windows sensors are back online, CrowdStrike’s CEO George Kurtz said on Thursday, nearly a week after a software update by the cybersecurity firm triggered a global outage. The company’s Falcon platform sensor is a security agent installed on devices such as laptops and desktops that protects them from threats. The outage happened because the advanced platform contained a fault that forced computers running Microsoft’s Windows operating system to crash and show the so-called blue screen of death. Microsoft said on Saturday about 8.5 million Windows devices had been affected in the outage that had left flights grounded, forced broadcasters off air and left customers without access to services such as healthcare or banking. “Our recovery efforts have been enhanced thanks to the development of automatic recovery techniques and by mobilizing all our resources to support our customers,” Kurtz said in a post, on LinkedIn. from Science and Technology News - Latest sci

Meta said in a statement the 63,000 accounts were on Instagram, adding that it had also removed 7,200 Facebook accounts, pages and groups dedicated to providing tips on scamming people. The company also took down a smaller coordinated network of around 2,500 that were linked to a group of around 20 individuals. Based on lunar soil samples returned by China’s Chang’e-5 mission in 2020, Chinese scientists have found a hydrated mineral “enriched” with molecular water, English daily South China Morning Post reported citing the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The latest discovery is in contrast to a previous conclusion based on samples brought back by American Apollo astronauts decades ago, that revealed no sign of water and led scientists to conclude that lunar soil must be completely dry, according to Nasa. GTA 6: Take-Two concerned about impact of review-bombing

Image
Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 publisher Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive has warned about the effects of review-bombing on the game’s success. Review bombing is the practice where players take to social media and review sites to criticise the issues in the game, real or imaginary. The review websites and spam comments usually leave a major effect on the games, and GTA 6 publisher Take-Two Interactive is also worried about its impact on the business. In an annual report on recent financial performance, Rockstar Games’ parent company acknowledge the effects of review-bombing on its latest releases. “Obtaining and maintaining high ratings of our games on the third-party platforms on which we operate are important as they help drive players to find our games,” the publisher wrote. Here’s how to use WhatsApp Web without a phone number

Image
The Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has recently unveiled a significant update allowing users to register without a phone number. The new feature also expands WhatsApp’s accessibility, enabling users without reliable phone numbers, often found in remote areas, to join the platform. Now, you can use an email address or other methods to sign up. This keeps your information safer and gives more privacy, especially for people like journalists who need to stay anonymous. Businesses can also leverage this feature to offer anonymous support, fostering trust with their customers. However, this update also raises security concerns, as WhatsApp must ensure the new sign-up methods are secure and resistant to fake accounts and misuse. Cybersecurity experts have praised this move, with Dr. Jane Doe, a cybersecurity analyst, noting, “WhatsA

Google scraps plan to remove cookies from Chrome

Image
Google is planning to keep third-party cookies in its Chrome browser, it said on Monday, after years of pledging to phase out the tiny packets of code meant to track users on the internet. The major reversal follows concerns from advertisers – the company’s biggest source of income – saying the loss of cookies in the world’s most popular browser will limit their ability to collect information for personalizing ads, making them dependent on Google’s user databases. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority had also scrutinized Google’s plan over concerns it would impede competition in digital advertising. “Instead of deprecating third-party cookies, we would introduce a new experience in Chrome that lets people make an informed choice that applies across their web browsing, and they’d be able to adjust that choice at any time,” Anthony Chavez, vice president of the Google-backed Privacy Sandbox initiative, said in a blog post. Microsoft said on Saturday about 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than 1% of all Windows machines, were affected. While analysts largely expect CrowdStrike to recover from the incident given its leading position in the industry, concerns around reputational damage, a hit to new customer contracts, competition and possible legal tussles remain. “We don’t believe it will materially affect renewals, at least not in the short term … However, we do think this will at least delay deal signings, if not cause some losses in closely c
