Nvidia set to overtake Apple

Image
Nvidia could soon surpass Apple to become the world’s second-most valuable company, as the biggest beneficiary of the surge in adoption of AI applications takes on the iPhone maker that has been the largest Wall Street firm by market value for years. The reliance of virtually all artificial intelligence applications such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT on Nvidia’s high-end chips has helped the stock nearly triple in value over the past year to $2.68 trillion. In contrast, Apple ceded its No. 1 spot to Microsoft earlier this year as the once high-flying company grapples with weak demand for its iPhones and tough competition in China. It was last valued at $2.92 trillion. “It is certainly notable because Apple has been so dominant for so long, especially on the growth and innovation front. Recently though, Apple’s innovation curve seems to have flattened, showing slower future growth,” said Brian Mulberry, client portfolio manager at Zacks Investment Management. “On the other hand, Nvidia has b

Apple’s Tap to Pay service launched by payment firms

Image
Payments companies Nexi, Stripe and Adyen have started offering businesses in Italy a way to accept payments from customers that relies on Apple’s iPhones, they said on Wednesday. Apple’s Tap to Pay service uses a wireless technology known as near-field communication (NFC) which allows the exchange of data between devices over a short distance. Nexi, Europe’s biggest payments group by volume of transactions processed, already offered shopowners the chance to use their phone to process payments using the NexiSoftPOS application. Until now, however, that could be used only on phones running on an Android operating system and not Apple’s iOs. Using a smartphone to process payments is particularly useful for small shops, which can in this way avoid having to pay for a specific piece of hardware. Dutch group Adyen, which mostly provides e-commerce services to large corporate clients but has been widening its offer to include bricks-and-mortar stores, also said it was launching the Tap

Sensors keep track of warning lines and obstacles as onboard computers guide the vehicle to a specific location, accelerating and braking as needed.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Airbus (@airbus) “These use cases are much more critical and complicated compared to those of the car industry,” said Matthieu Gallas, head of automation research at Airbus UpNext, the planemaker’s innovation lab. “Copying and pasting technology already available on the market won’t work.” Airbus is at pains to avoid linking the research to specific accidents, but comp

Google to make Pixel phones in India

Alphabet’s Google is planning to make its Pixel smartphone in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu and has tied up with Taiwan’s Foxconn, two sources with direct knowledge said on Thursday. “It will be making the latest models of its smartphones in the state… at the existing Foxconn facility (in Tamil Nadu),” one of the sources said on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to talk to the media. Foxconn already assembles Apple’s iPhones at a facility near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Big global manufacturers are looking to diversify their supply chain beyond China amid geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington and are considering India as an option. “The investment in Tamil Nadu is separate from the reported tie-up between Dixon and Google (to make smartphones in India),” the source said, adding the decision came about after the state’s officials met with Google executives recently. Euclid space telescope unveils new images of the cosmos

Image
PARIS: A mind-boggling number of shining galaxies, a purple and orange star nursery and a spiral galaxy similar to our Milky Way: new images were revealed from Europe’s Euclid space telescope on Thursday. It is the second set of images released by the European Space Agency since Euclid launched last year on the first-ever mission to investigate the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. Scientific data from Euclid was also published for the first time in the six-year mission, which aims to use its wide view to chart two billion galaxies across a third of the sky. Euclid project scientist Rene Laureijs told AFP that he was “personally most excited” about the image of a massive cluster of galaxies called Abell 2390. The image of the cluster, which is 2.7 billion light years away from Earth, encompasses more than 50,000 galaxies. Just one galaxy — such as our own — can be home to hundreds of billions or even trillions of stars, each of which could be bigger than the Sun. In Abel

Rumors about the iPhone 17 are circulating, and one particular rumor about an “iPhone 17 Slim” has gained traction. This device is expected to be released next year, slotting in between the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. Analysts predict a 6.6-inch display, improved selfie camera, and a centrally placed rear-facing camera. The “Plus” model may be discontinued, making way for a significant design overhaul in the iPhone 17 series. This could be a game-changer for Apple, similar to the iPhone X’s impact. The rumors suggest a focus on battery life, display size, and design innovation, which could shake up the iPhone lineup in 2024. Following the report, speculation has grown that the iPhone 17 Slim might be the rumored Ultra model. Positioned between the regular and Pro Max sizes, it could be the most expensive option. Huawei to announce major shift with HarmonyOS Next

Image
Beijing, China – In a significant move, Huawei is about to announce the release of HarmonyOS Next in September 2024, marking a major shift in its operating system strategy. The new iteration will completely eliminate support for Android apps, signaling the company’s continued effort to build a fully independent software ecosystem. Huawei’s journey away from Android began in 2019 after the US trade ban, which restricted the company’s access to Google services. Key Features HarmonyOS Next will not support Android APKs, focusing instead on HarmonyOS-specific applications. The new system will utilize HAP files, a packaging format designed exclusively for HarmonyOS, ensuring that apps are tailored to the operating system’s architecture. Mike York, a former animator for Rockstar Games said that the studio focuses primarily on PlayStation during its game’s launch. “The reason why a PC port comes later and not the first thing that comes out, is because they want to prioritise what sells,” he added in a recent interview. South Korea, Britain host AI summit with safety top of agenda

Image
SEOUL: South Korea and Britain kick off a major international summit on artificial intelligence in Seoul this week, where governments plan to press tech firms on AI safety. The meeting is a follow-up to the inaugural global AI safety summit at Bletchley Park in Britain last year, where dozens of countries voiced their fears to leading AI firms about the risks posed by their tech. Safety is again on the agenda at the AI Seoul Summit starting Tuesday and representatives are expected from leading AI firms, including ChatGPT maker OpenAI, Google DeepMind, French AI firm Mistral, Microsoft and Anthropic. “As with any new technology, AI brings new risks, including deliberate misuse from those who mean to do us harm,” South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Monday in a joint article. “However, with new models being released almost every week, we are still learning where these risks may emerge,” they said in the piece, published by the South Korean dail

Elon Musk arrives in Indonesia’s Bali for planned Starlink launch

Tycoon Elon Musk arrived on the Indonesian island of Bali on Sunday ahead of the planned launch of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service, which the Indonesian government hopes will boost internet penetration and health services in remote parts of the sprawling archipelago. Chief investment minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan greeted Musk’s arrival by private jet at Bali’s airport on Sunday morning, saying the two would discuss several important collaborations, including the inauguration of Starlink, according to a post on his Instagram page. Equal internet access across Southeast Asia’s largest economy, home to more than 270 million people living in three time zones, would enable people in remote areas to enjoy the same fast internet as those in urban areas, he said. Musk, the billionaire head of SpaceX and Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab , will launch Starlink with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at a community health centre in Denpasar, the capital of Bali, on Sunday afternoon, he said.

Twitter has become X.com, confirms Elon Musk

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has confirmed that social media platform Twitter is now officially X.com. “All core systems are now on X.com,” Musk wrote on X, as he posted an image of a logo of a white X on a blue circle. After buying Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, Elon Musk in July last year rebranded it to X. While several features including logo, official account, mobile apps, and its “X Premium” subscriptions were changed to “X”, the domain name remained Twitter.com until May 17. Now, searching Twitter.com redirects users to X.com, however, the original domain name still appears on some browsers. A message at the bottom of the login page reads, “We are letting you know that we are changing our URL, but your privacy and data protection settings remain the same.” In 1999, Musk launched a business under the name which was later merged with what is now known PayPal. Android security to be enhanced with new anti-theft features

Image
User privacy and security take center stage in Google’s latest iteration of the Android operating system. Unveiled at the I/O 2024 developer conference, Android 15 boasts a suite of innovative features designed to safeguard user data and render stolen devices inoperable. The crown jewel of this security overhaul is the Theft Detection Lock . This feature leverages artificial intelligence to identify movements indicative of theft, such as a phone being snatched from a user’s hand. By analyzing accelerometer data, the AI instantly locks the screen upon detecting such an abrupt movement, thwarting any attempt to access the device and its sensitive information. This proactive approach aims to deter theft by significantly reducing the window of opportunity for unauthorized access. Beyond theft prevention, Android 15 introduces Private Space , a secure enclave within the device. This designated area functions as a digital vault, allowing users to store sensitive applications like banking
